| Frequently Asked QuestionsFor Prospective Members and Your Parents| Aside from living accommodations what services can Sigma Nu provide me with that I wouldn’t be able to find in a dorm? |

Volunteering Opportunities At times, it seems like there is nothing fraternities can do to dispel our “Animal
House,” stereotype, despite our best efforts. This is unfortunate because
being Greek is more than just partying with friends, it’s also about giving
back to local communities. Being part of Sigma Nu and part of the MU Greek Community
means volunteer opportunities are at your fingertips. Whether your volunteering
as a helper for a day in the Missouri Special Olympic Games, or helping coordinate
this years Homecoming as a member of the Steering Commitee, or just participating
in one of the many philanthropic events set up by individual Greek houses, volunteer
work looks great on scholarship applications and personal resumes.
Social Opportunities
Each election year our chapter elects two members to plan our social events.
It is their job to coordinate our parties at off-campus locations with safe
transportation to and from the house. Their responsibility also extends to the
planning of our annual formal and semi-formal Rho Chapter functions. The Greek
community is just that. A community. Each semester Sigma Nu pairs itself with
one of the fourteen sororities on campus. Together we participate in activities
like building floats, performing skits, dancing and playing sports. In past
years we have partnered with Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, and this semester we are looking forward to an incredible Greek Week with the women of Chi Omega
Academic Opportunities
The habits you develop during the first semester of your college education will
likely stay with you until you graduate. That is exactly why its important to
learn how to manage your time and set your priorities. Pledging Sigma Nu means
participating in our New Member Education program and learning how to spend
your time as efficiently as possible. Because of the wide variety of majors
that our brothers study Sigma Nu provides an excellent support base for new
members. All too often freshmen find themselves full of questions with nobody
around to answer them. Having an older guy down the hall who has been through
the same process can save you valuable time. Scheduling appointments with counselors
isn’t always as easy as it is during Summer Welcome. The Leadership Ethics
Acheivment Development, or LEAD, program instituted by Sigma Nu Fraternity International
in 1987 was created so that members of the fraternity could help each other
develop teamwork and communication skills for the future. Every Sunday our LEAD
Chair asks for the participation of the entire houses in exercises that help
reinforce leadership and teamwork skills.
| | I understand fraternities costs a lot of money? |
|---|
Sigma Nu is competitively priced with other fraternities, apartments and dorms. Meals are included in our house bill versus apartments where food is extra. Our monthly price compares to the mid-point dorm costs, with no meal-ticket hassles. If you sign a 7-semester contract with Rho Chapter, your costs of room and board will be $6,020, far less than the cost of an average MU dorm ($6,755)
| | What about pledgeship, hazing and the horror stories I’ve heard? |
|---|
Sigma Nu is the only fraternity founded on a principle of no hazing. There is no hazing with our house, and it will not be tolerated.
| | My parents must approve my decision to pledge. What information is available? |
|---|
In short, a fraternity is a great way to make a big place smaller. When coming to Mizzou, it was a tough sell for many of our brothers and their parents. Several things to consider: - Dorms have little supervision.
- Rho Chapter offers significant supervision: a house mother who lives in the house, an alumni advisor and board, and a parents club.
Schedule time to visit with some of our alumni or the parents of some of our active chapter members. We would be happy to arrange these conversations.
Let us offer your parents five suggestions to obtain information:- Spend time on our website to learn about Sigma Nu Rho Chapter.
- Meet in person with our two recruitment chairmen.
- Talk to our Recruitment Alumni Advisor Roger Kinney.
- Schedule an in person visit to our home at 710 College Avenue.
